About Me

Pablo Dotro at the Lab

Hi there!

Welcome to the ego-part of Elysium ;)
Well... my name is Pablo Dotro, also known as "The Mage of the Many Shadows".  I am a strange character... I work at the Waves and Thermodynamics Lab, Physics Dept. (FCEyN) at UBA, the University of Buenos Aires as lead technician. My technical specialty is Chemistry, but I worked almost all my life doing computer science, systems administration, software development and, since 1999 physics.

On the other hand, I am an occultist, I do Tarot readings, I am studying to become a professional astrologer (at CABA) and a Wiccan priest (Correllian Tradition). I am quite open about what I do, which sometimes puts me at odds with some people, but the reward has been great, as my life has been enriched by meeting some extraordinary individuals, and helping a lot of people to explore their own spirituality and inner life.

I live my life fusing the ways of science, art, magick and spirituality. It's a very difficult path sometimes. But it is who I am. I cannot do otherwise.

I love to write (as you can see browsing the contents of this site), and to read... I read a lot of my "usual" subjects: science, magick, astrology, Wicca, Tarot and so on, but also a lot of fiction,  history, philosophy and mythology. I really love music... with the exception of certain types of Latin American music and some of the heaviest metal styles, I am quite omnivorous musically. I used to play the piano and the guitar, but my current life does not allow for such luxury as time to practice ;)

Photography is another one of my interests, one I will get back into when I manage to buy a digital camera, and recover my scanner (anyone has a spare Scanjet 6300 lamp to donate to the Cause?). Some of my earlier work can be found spread throughout this site... more is coming

As a practicing and 'out-of-the-closet' Pagan, Magickian and Witch, I am a somewhat known figure in the local esoteric landscape of Buenos Aires, and also maintain a healthy level of involvement in several internet groups. For a few years I was part of the moderator staff at the mythical TarotL mailing list. While I do not have an ad in the yellow pages ŕ-la Harry Dresden, I am quite approachable in this, and I often offer advise. I do not, however, do any spells for anyone.

Bio:

I was born on November 16th, 1976, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. My mother was a student then, and my father was an electronics engineer working for the national atomic energy commission.

I have a sister, three and a half years younger, named Gabriela, who has recently returned to Argentina after a very successful academic career in Canada and the US.

Even since I was in elementary school, I have shown a keen interest in sciences, be it math or natural sciences. I used to develop inventions and create experiments at a very young age.

I went to a tech school later, and obtained a technical degree in chemical sciences. I am very proud of the skills I obtained there, both in the lab and in the theoretical subjects. Twice I represented my school and city in scientific expositions. Also, I was a senior member of the "Club de Ciencias Leonardo Da Vinci" a scientific institution created by students, for students. We used to teach beginner and advanced courses of experimental chemistry and physics for the younger students, developing improved lab techniques that could later be included in the standard curriculum of the school.

Besides sciences, the two other passions of my life had been computers and  literature. I have a "sixth sense" for computers. I speak their logic like a second language, and I am able to spend many hours focused in computer problems. I learned to program in BASIC at age 9, using a Commodore 64. Later came the PC, and I mastered Quick Basic, and later some of C and Visual Basic. Lately, I have become involved in learning and writing systems in Java, MatLab, LabVIEW and Ruby.

When I finished school I began studying chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, but with no good results... I had to find a job and start to work, and that took away a lot of time from me.  But on a deeper level than that, I think that I was not ready at that time to be a full time student with the level of commitment that is necessary to survive College at UBA.

I became head of the IS department of a small company (which involved almost everything: repairs, systems administration, software development and support and a lot of odd things common to Argentina's particular economic chaos). I worked there for nearly three years. Later I did work in commercial software development and private consulting, but the project got dismantled by the capitalist partners. It was the late 90s, the take off of the local Internet market down here, so I worked with a couple of friends doing commercial web sites before the reality check of Argentina's economy hit us again.

For some years now I am working at the University, as technician of one of the Waves and Thermodynamics Lab. As a second avenue,  I worked in Education for some time. From March, 2001 to June, 2002 I was a teacher of Computer Sciences at a local school, teaching to kids from age 3 to 17. Working with kids (and teenagers who refuse themselves to be called kids) ;) has been a great experience, I learned a lot, and gained a lot of friends...

I tried again private consulting, forming a joint venture with a few friends. With its ups and downs, the project worked up to 2004, when we decided to go separate ways after some unusual circumstances. During the last stages, I did a lot of organization and project management. I was head of QA, so I took upon myself the role of defining the organizational changes needed to certify as ISO 9000 and CMMI company. In the end, it was a very good experience... I learned a lot.

I have been "on the web" since 1997, and I consider myself fairly skilled on the ways of the Internet. Elysium's present incarnation took form in the early months of 2000, and while it is now in a dire need to get updated, this is one of the sites I am most proud of.

I am a Pagan, a Witch and a magickian. Which means that my religion is not in the lines of the three great monotheistic faiths. I am a polytheist eclectic, a Correllian Wiccan with some recognizable traces of a ceremonial magick background, a rational and spiritual approach to life, philosophy and metaphysics and a lot of self schooling and practice in the Art of Magick. I  celebrate the Esbats and Sabbats (sometimes in solitary, leading group rituals). I am a student of all things magickal... hermetic kabbalah, divination disciplines (tarot, runes, I Ching, etc.), ritual magick, western mysticism, esoteric and occult philosophy... and a long etcetera. I am working towards gaining a fully recognized initiation and clergy status from the Correllian Nativist tradition, with the long term objective of setting up an official shrine or even a temple here in Buenos Aires.

I use my skills and knowledge both for myself and for helping others. I have a very strict set of moral and ethical principles to guide my work... but in apparent contradiction to the title, I am not altogether "occult", and you can find me comfortably doing tarot readings in the most unimaginable places, always willing to discuss about almost anything (of course, with the proper regard to secrecy when secrecy is due... after all, "to keep silent" is one of the four Laws of the Sphinx ;) )
